The Bayeux Tapestry, often called England's first comic strip, is nearly 1,000 years old and depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It illustrates the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror and the defeat of King Harold. The tapestry, which is actually an embroidery, is 230 feet long and was originally housed in the Bayeux Cathedral but is now displayed in a museum. The tapestry's creation is attributed to the Normans, and it includes a controversial scene of King Harold's death. It also highlights the use of the stirrup, a military innovation. Despite its name, the Bayeux Tapestry is not a true tapestry but an embroidered work.
