The First Supreme Court Case That Mattered | Chisholm v. Georgia

In 1777, Georgia promised to pay Robert Farquhar for supplies during the American War of Independence but failed to do so. After Farquhar's death, Alexander Chisholm sued Georgia for the debt. The case reached the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Chisholm, challenging state sovereignty. This led to the 11th Amendment, preventing states from being sued without consent. The debt was finally settled in 1847.
