Germany To Mandate Face Masks Starting Monday

Germany will require face masks in most states for shopping and public transport starting Monday. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that while lockdown measures will be lifted soon, social distancing will remain until at least May 3rd. Despite a fragile success in controlling the virus, new infections have risen for two consecutive days. Germany has approved clinical trials for a potential vaccine. The health ministry plans to increase mask production to 50 million per week by August. Germany joins Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic in mandating protective gear.
