The Costa Rican presidential election will be decided in a runoff on April 1. Fabricio Alvarado, an evangelical preacher opposed to same-sex marriage, led the initial vote with 24.78%, despite low poll numbers in December. His stance against a pro-same-sex marriage opinion by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights boosted his popularity. His opponent in the runoff will be Carlos Alvarado, a former labor minister from the center-left Citizens' Action Party, who received 21.74% of the votes. The election saw over a third of voters abstain, marking the first time in over 50 years that the traditional parties, National Liberation and Social Christian Unity, are not in contention for power.
