The drought has affected nearly two million hectares and caused the death of over 30,000 cattle. La Guajira is the most vulnerable area, with a humanitarian crisis declared due to child malnutrition. The government warns that the dry season is just beginning, and the El Niño phenomenon, which brings unusual warmth to the Pacific, could worsen the situation with more droughts and floods.
