VOICED : Deforestación récord en el primer semestre en la Amazonía brasileña

The first half of 2022 saw unprecedented deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, with the largest loss of rainforest since monitoring began in 2016. Fires also reached a 15-year high for June, increasing by 17% compared to the same period in 2021. The devastated forest area is three times the size of Rio de Janeiro. January and February were particularly critical, with record deforestation during the wet season. Environmentalists blame President Jair Bolsonaro's pro-agribusiness policies for the destruction. Despite a presidential decree banning fires for 120 days from June 23, over 1,100 fires were recorded. The previous highest deforestation record was in 2021, with a gradual increase since 2017.
