WW1: Battle of the Somme 1916

In 1916, World War I's Western Front saw a stalemate with heavy casualties. The Allies planned a joint offensive at the Somme to relieve Verdun. Despite strong German defenses, the British launched a massive artillery bombardment. However, communication issues and intact German defenses led to high British casualties. The battle lasted four months, with significant losses on both sides. Despite being seen as a disaster, the Somme taught the Allies valuable lessons in trench warfare.
