Bacteria are omnipresent, found in the environment, on our skin, and within our bodies, especially in the gut. They are single-celled organisms that play a significant role in our bodily functions. The existence of bacteria was first discovered in 1674 by the Dutch scientist Antoine van Leeuwenhoek.
