Amherst College Levels the Playing Field

Amherst College has decided to stop giving admissions preferences to alumni children, aiming to provide more opportunities for a diverse range of applicants. Legacy students currently constitute about 11% of each class. The practice of favoring legacy students is widespread but has been criticized for perpetuating inequality and primarily benefiting the wealthy. Alongside this change, Amherst will increase its financial aid budget to $71 million annually, potentially supporting 60% of its students.
