Initially an unknown figure, he gained prominence and was a leading candidate alongside Bernie Sanders in early primaries like Iowa and New Hampshire. However, his momentum slowed with third and fourth-place finishes in Nevada and South Carolina. At 38, he was the youngest Democratic candidate and would have been the first openly gay nominee for the party.
