Fish need oxygen to survive, just like all animals. Instead of breathing air, fish absorb oxygen from water using their gills, which are located under their mouths. When fish open their mouths, water flows through the gills, which are specialized organs that extract dissolved oxygen. Although water contains less oxygen than air, gills have a large surface area to efficiently absorb oxygen. The oxygen then enters the fish's bloodstream, allowing them to exhale carbon dioxide back into the water. Gills function similarly to lungs, enabling fish to live and breathe underwater.
