Marco Archer, a Brazilian, was executed in Indonesia for drug trafficking, marking the first execution of a Brazilian abroad in peacetime. Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff expressed outrage and sought clemency, which was ignored. Indonesia enforces strict drug laws and resumed executions in 2013 after a moratorium. Archer was convicted in 2004 for smuggling cocaine. Another Brazilian, Rodrigo Muxfeld Gularte, is also on death row. Amnesty International criticized the executions as a severe regression.
