The Black Death led to labor shortages in England, allowing workers to demand higher wages. The government, under Richard II, imposed poll taxes to fund the 100 Years War, causing widespread discontent. Rebellions erupted in Essex and Kent, spreading to London, where rebels gained support. Despite initial negotiations, the rebellion was crushed after the death of leader Wat Tyler. The government restored order, reestablished serfdom, and executed many rebels, achieving little change.
