Horse-Riding Librarians

In the 1930s, a third of Kentucky's population was illiterate. To combat this, the government launched the Pack Horse Library Initiative during the Great Depression. Female librarians on horseback delivered books to isolated communities in Eastern Kentucky. This initiative, part of the New Deal, provided educational resources and created scrapbooks with local content. Despite ending in 1943, its legacy continues with Kentucky's extensive bookmobile system. The video concludes by questioning the factors contributing to modern literacy challenges in America.
