John Hagopian, an optical physicist at NASA Goddard, discusses the use of carbon nanotubes in enhancing scientific instruments for space flight. These nanotubes, grown using catalyst-assisted chemical vapor deposition, are extremely small and require electron microscopes for visualization. They are used to improve light absorption in telescopes, making them ten times darker than current black paints, thus increasing data efficiency. The nanotubes are robust, adhering well to substrates, and undergo rigorous testing for space conditions. They are also used in commercial products like sporting goods. The technology is close to being qualified for spaceflight use.
