The Brazilian Ministry of Health follows WHO's advice, noting fewer mosquitoes in the winter. The WHO stated that changing the Olympics' location wouldn't significantly affect the virus's spread. Experts had urged moving the Olympics due to the expected influx of 500,000 tourists. The Zika virus can cause neurological disorders and microcephaly, with Brazil being the most affected country, having 1.5 million infections since 2015. Globally, 60 countries are affected by Zika.
