The American Presidential Election of 1844

The 15th Presidential election in 1844 was the last to be held on different days in different states. John Tyler, at odds with both major parties, attempted a third-party run. The Democratic Party was divided over Texas annexation, leading to James Polk's unexpected nomination. The Whig Party nominated Henry Clay, who had previously lost three times. Polk's support for Manifest Destiny resonated with voters, leading to his narrow victory over Clay. Polk became the 11th President, with George Dallas as Vice President. This election was unique as Polk lost both his birth and residence states.
