In a Mexican indigenous community, vaccines against COVID-19 are not welcomed. The mayor of San Juan Cancú in Chiapas reported that after a consultation, the community of over 24,000 decided against vaccination. Only two individuals volunteered for the vaccine. The community is content and healthy, with no current illnesses, leading to a rejection of vaccination by all age groups. Last year, indigenous areas in Chiapas experienced unrest due to false rumors about COVID-19. Some villages even blocked health personnel from entering. Decisions in these communities are often made through traditional governance systems, which are respected by civil authorities. These communities have their own health committees and peace courts.
