Peruvian environmental authorities fined Repsol $5.7 million for a 2022 oil spill, adding to previous fines totaling $10.7 million and an initial penalty of $1.25 million. The spill, involving 12,000 barrels of oil, occurred on January 15, 2022, when the Mare Doricum tanker was unloading at the La Pampilla refinery. The oil spread over 140 kilometers, killing marine life and affecting fishing and tourism. Peru is suing Repsol and five other companies for $4.5 billion, while eight Repsol executives are under investigation. Repsol claims over 3,200 families have signed compensation agreements, with 9,900 people receiving advance payments, and reports 95.7% compliance with its remediation plan.
