Mario Vargas Llosa, an 86-year-old Hispanic-Peruvian writer, continued writing even during his COVID-19 hospitalization in Madrid. He shared this at the Buenos Aires Book Fair, explaining his reliance on familiar themes during tough times. Vargas Llosa described his hospitalization experience, highlighting the relief of receiving oxygen. Despite these challenges, he remains active in the literary world, launching a story contest and presenting his latest book, 'La mirada quieta,' about Spanish writer Benito Pérez Galdós. He dedicated 18 months to reading Pérez Galdós' works during the pandemic. As the last living representative of the Latin American literary boom, Vargas Llosa was recently elected to the French Academy of Language.
