VOICED : Varela presidente electo de Panam

Juan Carlos Varela, the opposition candidate, won the Panamanian presidential election with 39% of the votes, defeating the ruling party's candidate, José Domingo Arias. Varela, a member of the conservative Panameñista Party and the current vice president, promised a government focused on unity, social justice, and anti-corruption. A successful businessman, Varela became a strong opponent of President Ricardo Martinelli after being removed from his position as foreign minister in 2011. The election was one of the closest in Panama's history. While Martinelli is praised for economic management, he faces criticism for corruption and neglecting the poor. Varela will lead a country with a competitive economy but growing social inequality.
