The Mexican Senate approved a controversial energy reform allowing private investment in the energy sector. The reform opens exploration and extraction activities to private national and foreign companies, previously exclusive to Pemex. The reform also proposes removing Pemex's union from its board. Supporters aim to modernize Pemex, which has seen a significant drop in crude production from 3.4 million barrels per day in 2004 to 2.5 million in 2013. The Mexican Congress has until the end of the current legislative period to approve the reform.
