Malassezia is a yeast that lives on human scalps, causing dandruff in about half the population. It thrives in oily environments, consuming saturated fats from sebum and leaving unsaturated fats, which disrupt the skin barrier and cause inflammation. This leads to rapid skin cell turnover and visible flakes. Antifungal treatments are effective, but the exact reasons why some people are more susceptible to dandruff remain unclear. Research is ongoing to understand genetic predispositions and the role of the immune system in dandruff formation.
