Ecuador is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to mediate a meeting between Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro amid a severe political and border crisis. As the president of CELAC, Ecuador is concerned about the situation and has facilitated meetings, including a recent one in Quito. The crisis began in late August when Venezuela closed parts of the border following an attack on its military, which it blames on Colombian paramilitaries. Since then, over 1,400 Colombians have been deported, and nearly 20,000 have returned to Colombia fearing expulsion. Tensions escalated further with Bogotá's accusations of Venezuelan airspace violations, which Caracas denies.
