Classical conditioning is a foundational behavioral theory developed by Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist. While studying salivary glands in animals, Pavlov observed that animals salivated not only when food was placed in their mouths but also in response to other stimuli associated with food. This led to the identification of the 'conditional stimulus', distinguishing it from the natural stimulus, food. Pavlov's findings laid the groundwork for what is now known as classical conditioning.
