VOICED : Guatemala desarticula banda de traficantes personas a EEUU

Guatemalan authorities dismantled a major human trafficking network with the help of local police and the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations. The investigation began in April 2021 after a Guatemalan migrant's death in San Antonio. The traffickers charged between $9,000 and $19,400 per person, amassing nearly two million dollars. This operation sets a significant precedent for extraditing human traffickers. Annually, thousands of Central Americans attempt to reach the U.S. seeking employment, fleeing poverty, violence, and the economic crisis worsened by COVID-19. On June 27, 53 migrants, including 21 Guatemalans, were found dead in a trailer in San Antonio, abandoned in extreme heat.
