On Sunday, Salvadorans voted to renew Congress and local governments, a crucial event for President Salvador Sánchez Serén's governance as his term ends in June 2019. Over five million people were eligible to vote for 84 congressional seats and local officials across 262 municipalities. The voting process was calm, with low turnout initially, under the watch of 37,000 security personnel. Results were expected to take time due to the complex process. Voters could choose by party or individual candidates. Polls showed a slight lead for the right-wing opposition over the ruling left-wing party. The ruling party needed to negotiate with minor parties in Congress, holding 31 of 84 seats against the opposition's 35. The election was also vital for supporting anti-crime laws, as El Salvador had a high homicide rate in 2017.
