Ukraine admitted to faking the death of Russian journalist Arkady Vavchenko to thwart an assassination plot. The journalist appeared at a press conference, thanking Ukrainian security services and apologizing to his wife. The operation aimed to capture the man who planned the murder, allegedly paid by Russian special services. Reporters Without Borders criticized the simulation for undermining trust in political assassination cases. Vavchenko, a former soldier and Kremlin critic, fled Russia in 2017 due to harassment.
