Rafael Marquez, born in Zamora, Spain, in 1979, began his football career with the Mexican Atlas Football Club, debuting at 17. He became the club's captain and made 77 league appearances. In 1999, he joined Monaco, winning the French league title in his first season. That year, he also shone in the under-20 FIFA World Cup and Copa America. Marquez moved to Barcelona, helping them secure a second-place finish and later win the Spanish league. Since debuting for Mexico in 1997, he has been pivotal in World Cup campaigns, playing in all 2002 matches and preparing for 2006.
