First group of US Women's Army Auxiliary Corps members begin training in Iowa in 1942

The Army initiated a new experiment in the female war effort, closely monitored by the Military High Command. This involved the enlistment of women into the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. The selected women, outfitted in specially designed uniforms, began their training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. A total of 784 young women were chosen for this pioneering effort.
