The COP 25 Environmental Summit was initially set to be hosted by Chile, but due to ongoing protests and difficult circumstances, Chile withdrew from hosting. Spain offered to host the event in Madrid on the originally scheduled dates. The protests in Chile began over a subway fare hike and escalated into widespread demonstrations against financial inequality, involving nearly a million participants.
