In Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Mask of the Red Death,' a deadly plague devastates the land. Prince Prospero, seeking to escape the disease, retreats to a secluded abbey with his courtiers. They hold a grand masquerade ball in a suite of seven uniquely colored rooms. A mysterious figure, resembling a victim of the Red Death, appears at the ball, causing fear and anger. Prospero confronts the figure but dies in the process. The figure is revealed to be the embodiment of the Red Death, which claims the lives of all the revelers, leaving darkness and decay in its wake.
