Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'Young Goodman Brown' explores the dark side of human morality and the Puritan belief in inherent sinfulness. Goodman Brown leaves his wife, Faith, for a mysterious journey into the forest, where he encounters a man with a snake-like staff. As he witnesses a devilish ceremony involving respected community members, including his wife, he becomes disillusioned. Upon returning home, he is filled with distrust and alienation, unable to love or trust anyone, leading to a tragic end.
