In Geoffrey Chaucer's 'The Wife of Bath's Tale', a knight in King Arthur's time must discover what women desire most to avoid execution. After a year of searching, he learns from an old woman that women want power over their husbands. The queen agrees, sparing his life. However, the old woman demands marriage as promised. Unhappy, the knight reluctantly agrees. On their wedding night, she offers him a choice: she can be old and faithful or young and unfaithful. The knight lets her choose, and she becomes young and beautiful, leading to a happy marriage.
