Camp Green Lake, once a large lake in Texas, is now a dry wasteland. The camp is for boys who have committed crimes, where they dig holes daily in the hot sun as a form of rehabilitation. The environment is harsh, with high temperatures and little shade. Wildlife such as rattlesnakes and scorpions are common, but the most dangerous are yellow-spotted lizards. The camp is run by a warden who owns the only shade. Stanley Yelson, a boy from a poor family, is given a choice between jail and the camp.
