A brief history of Goths

Goths were...

• Pirates from Scandinavia that were the ancestors of the Vikings.

• A religious separatist movement that sought to return Rome to its historic paganism. 

• A group of pagans who Invaded the Roman Empire in 298 C.E.

• A powerful semi-nomadic, Germanic people composed of the Visigoths and Ostrogoths.

How did the Goths' conquest of Rome impact the future of the Western Roman Empire.

• The Western Roman Empire fragmented and was never successfully restored.

• The Roman Senate was briefly restored and ushered in a short but glorious "Second Roman Golden Age."

• This ended the Romanesque period in art and architecture and replaced it with the Gothic.

• It ended internal conflict and allowed the Western Empire to re conquer the Eastern Empire.

The term "Gothic Architecture" was used...

• to glorify the accomplishments of the Goths and other barbarians who crushed the Roman Empire.

• It was a negative, or pejorative, term applied to describe certain medieval build styles as "crude and inferior."

• by medieval builders to define themselves as distinct from the decadent classical builders that came before. 

• by archeologists who needed a term to explain the difference between the Tutor Manors that came after and the Viking Halls that came before.
