What is the primary purpose of the Community Safety Education Act?

• To increase the number of traffic citations issued.

• They want law enforcement and the community to all be on the same page as far as behavioral expectations during traffic stops.

• To reduce the number of police officers on the road.

• To provide legal advice to citizens during police interactions.

Think about that traffic stop.  Could either party have done something different to make things go a little bit more smoothly? If so, what?

What should you do when an officer approaches your car during a traffic stop?

• Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel and wait for the officer to give further instructions.

• Immediately reach for your license and registration.

• Move around to show you're not hiding anything.

• Turn off the overhead light.

A police officer can arrest you for refusing to show your drivers license during a traffic stop.

• Get in their face about it during the traffic stop

• Take it to the officer's police department and let them do an investigation.

Note: Probable cause means that the officer sees, hears, smells something that gives them a suspicion that there might be something illegal in your car.  They don't have to explain it to you for it to be probable cause. They will have to verify it before a court later on if there is a legal question about the search.

• Use your signal and look for a safe place to turn off the road.

• Panic and floor it, hoping they can't catch up to you.
