Nelson Mandela's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech 1993

Mandela recognizes several individuals in the beginning of his speech such as F.W. de Klerk,  the late Chief Albert Lutuli, His Grace Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Why these individuals? What do they all have in common?

• they are all from South Africa

• they have all won the Nobel Prize fighting to better humanity

• they are all family members of Mandela

• they have opposed Mandela's efforts to end Apartheid, and he wants them to know he has triumphed over them

What do you think a DICHOTOMY is given Mandela's examples:

winner who works for equal rights) from a prison in Burma.

Why does South Africa care about what happens in the country of Burma?

• Mandela wants to make sure his country remains a powerful figure in world political events.

• Like Mandela, she is working to help people achieve equality in her own country as well as across the world.

• Burma is a potential threat to South Africa and Mandela wants to make peace.

• Burma also deserves recognition and by doing so, Mandela is gaining an ally.

Why does Mandela say the Nobel award is not just about the PAST? 

How is this award also about the FUTURE?

• The award represents what the world could be in the future when everyone has equality and human dignity.

• The future of South Africa depends upon Mandela's leadership. Winning the award will help him get re-elected.

• Winning this prize will bring riches to help South Africa become a more powerful nation.

• South Africa is just the beginning. Other countries in Africa will soon follow Mandela's lead.

Why is Mandela ALLUDING to Martin Luther King, Jr?

• He is proposing King become the next leader of Africa.

• He is trying to encourage America and its people to support Africa's causes.

• The reference is inspirational. King too fought for the same causes to better humanity.

• He is suggesting that King is merely a leader of the past, but current leaders must build a "new age" and stronger future together.
