9th - 9th Grade
Mathematics
This Grade 9 mathematics review worksheet strengthens students’ ability to recognize and use sequence rules. Across 10 multiple-choice questions, students identify additive, subtractive, multiplicative, and alternating patterns; find later terms in arithmetic sequences; and distinguish between different types of sequence rules, including rules involving decimals and negative values. The worksheet also connects sequences to function notation. Students generate the first five terms from t(n)=3n+2 and evaluate t(20) and t(12) from linear rules, reinforcing substitution and arithmetic accuracy. It is designed for Algebra 1 review, independent practice, homework, or a quick formative check. This free printable worksheet includes a complete answer key for efficient checking and feedback.

This Grade 9 Algebra 1 worksheet uses 10 multiple-choice questions to practice identifying additive, subtractive, multiplicative, and alternating sequence rules. Students also find the next terms in an arithmetic sequence and use function rules such as t(n)=3n+2 to generate terms or evaluate a specific input.
Begin by modeling how to compare consecutive terms, then have students identify the additive or subtractive change in items such as 3, 7, 11, 15 and 97, 86, 75, 64. Next, contrast additive patterns with multiplicative and alternating patterns, such as 3, 9, 27, 81 and -2, 2, -2, 2. Finish by connecting the pattern work to substituting values into t(n)=3n+2 and other linear rules.
Watch for students choosing the wrong operation when a sequence changes by multiplication rather than addition, especially in 3, 9, 27, 81. Students may also miss the negative common difference in 97, 86, 75, 64, treat the alternating -2 and 2 pattern as addition, or begin t(n)=3n+2 with 2 instead of evaluating the rule at n=1. In the function items, check that students substitute the stated input and simplify the signed arithmetic correctly.
Wayground provides this sequence-and-function review as a printable PDF and as a digital quiz, and it includes a complete answer key. You can grade printed student submissions by scanning their work with the Wayground for Teachers app, or review responses through the digital quiz.
Use the worksheet’s Advanced Settings to adjust font spacing and font size so the 10 multiple-choice sequence and function items are easier to navigate. You can also enable a dyslexia-friendly font or translate the worksheet into another language when those options support access to the sequence rules and function notation.
