English
This free printable Kindergarten English worksheet builds foundational phonological awareness through syllable counting, onset and rime identification, word segmentation, and onset–rime blending. Students answer 10 questions—9 multiple choice and 1 multiple select—using words such as cat, sun, bat, dog, apple, tree, rain, and bird. The worksheet helps young learners distinguish the beginning sound or sound cluster from the remaining rime, separate words into onset and rime, and combine these parts to form a word. It also compares one-syllable and two-syllable words, giving teachers a focused way to check early sound-structure skills. The worksheet is available as a free printable worksheet with a complete answer key for guided practice, independent work, or a quick classroom check.

This Kindergarten worksheet covers four connected phonological-awareness skills: counting syllables, identifying the onset and rime, segmenting words into those parts, and blending an onset with a rime to make a word. Its 10 items use multiple-choice and multiple-select formats to ask students to analyze words such as “sun,” “bat,” “dog,” “tree,” “rain,” and “bird.”
Introduce the worksheet by clapping the syllables in words such as “cat,” “frog,” and “apple,” then model how the onset is the beginning sound or sound cluster and the rime is the remaining part. Before students work independently, use “dog” and “bird” to show how to segment a word and use “c” plus “at” to demonstrate blending. After completion, ask students to explain why “tr” is the onset in “tree” and “ain” is the rime in “rain.”
Students may count letters instead of syllables, especially in the one-syllable word “frog” and the two-syllable word “apple.” They may also treat the first letter or a larger chunk as the onset, choosing “su” for “sun” or “ra” for “rain,” rather than identifying “s” and “ain.” In the segmentation items, check that students preserve the whole word by selecting “d, og” for “dog” and “b / ird” for “bird,” and in the blending item, watch for choices that do not form “cat.”
This worksheet is available as a printable PDF and as a digital quiz on Wayground, so you can assign the 10 onset, rime, syllable, segmentation, and blending questions in the format that fits your lesson. It includes a complete answer key for checking student responses. Printable submissions can also be graded by scanning student work with the Wayground for Teachers app.
Use the worksheet’s Advanced Settings to increase font size or widen font spacing so the word-analysis choices are easier to read and select. You can also apply a dyslexia-friendly font or translate the worksheet into another language when that supports access to the syllable, onset, and rime tasks.
