As students work through the multiple-choice items, ask them to predict whether the product should be greater or less than the starting number and explain why options such as 0.0178 or 1.78 are not correct for 17.8 × 0.01.
Watch for students treating 0.1 or 0.01 as if they were 10 or 100, especially in items such as 5.02 × 0.1 and 17.8 × 0.01. Students may also use the wrong number of place-value shifts for 10², 10³, or 10⁴, or lose track of zeros in products such as 0.0891 × 10⁴ and 42.8 × 10². Ask them to estimate whether each product should increase or decrease before choosing an answer.
