Trains and railroads have a long and interesting history around the world. The first trains started in England in about 1819, but they weren't for passengers. They were only for freight. The first railroad in the U.S. started in 1830. Trains became an important way to travel in the U.S., because the country is so big. In 1869, railroads crossed the whole country.
Every country in Europe started its own railroad system, and they were all very different. In some countries like Spain and Portugal, the train cars are wider than in other countries. Today, you can travel to most towns and cities in Europe by train. You can even take a train from England to France. In 1994, a special train started that goes under the sea between the two countries.
Railroads are very important in all parts of the world. The longest railroad system in the world is in Russia. You can ride 9,228 kilometers on one train! In Peru, the Central Railway crosses over the mountains at 4,700 meters. It's the highest train service in the world. And in Japan, train travel is sometimes faster than plane travel. What is the tallest mountain in the world?
At 8,850 meters, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. (That's 29,035 feet.) It is located in the center of Asia, between Nepal and China. The Tibetan people who live there call the mountain Chomolungma. The mountain got its English name in 1865.
Mount Everest is one of the most dangerous places in the world. The weather is very bad there, with strong winds and cold temperatures, and the air is very thin. For many years, people tried to climb Mount Everest, but they couldn't get to the top. In 1924, two men named George Mallory and Andrew Irvine went up, but they didn't come back down. Many other people tried climbing or even flying there in an airplane. Finally, in 1953, two men found the best way to the top. They were Edmund Hillary from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal. At the top, they took photos and left some sweets and a cross.
Later, many other people used Hillary and Tenzing's way to climb to the top of Everest. Climbers must practice for many years before they go to Mount Everest. More than 2,238 men and women from different countries have reached the top of the mountain. The best time to climb is in April and May, before summer starts. But it is still very dangerous and difficult. On May 10, 1996, there was a very bad storm, and fifteen climbers died on the mountain. A movie called "Into Thin Air" tells about this accident.
