A Catholic priest or religious leader who came to the new world to bring the Catholic faith to the Native Texans.  In Spain, this word meant "little brother" or "brother".  In today's Catholic church, they might be called "Father" instead. 

This Mission is sometimes called the "Mother" of all Texas Missions.  'She' was the first to be founded by Friar Hidalgo only 35 or so miles from the Rio Grande River.  "She" has a funny name for a mission that is called the Mother of all Missions because she is named after a guy...John the Baptist. 

These were the people who SOLD goods to the people who were living inside the Missions, Presidios, settlements, and Ranches.  These people saw a need and found a way to make a business out of it. 

The Indian and Spanish word that we get 'TEXAS' from was from the Hasinai (Has-in-eye) Tribe word that meant "Hello, Friend."  The Spanish would mark maps of the regions where these Indians lived and people just assumed that was what they called the entire area...so they called it Texas. 

This was the main Denomination or "Type" of religion that the Spanish were trying to convert or change the Natives to believing was BEST for them.  This was the only religion allowed in the Missions. 

The system of Spanish Settlement in Texas was a sequence.  First, Friars built Missions.  Then, Soldiers were needed to protect the missions so they built Presidios.  Next, Towns were needed for Merchants to sell goods to the Missions and Presidios.  Last, Ranches were built to provide land for crops and livestock. 

When a country has a Colony, or a new territory in a different country than it's King or Queen; the ruler might set up a ruler in that NEW Land who will ACT in the place of the King or Queen.  He or She is called this.  (You might have seen it in Star Wars movies).
