It took until 2007, 42 years, until the Police Officer, James B. Fowler was charged with murder. Officer Fowler plead guilty to manslaughter. Fowler served 5 months of a 10 year sentence before being released because poor health,

The policeman, James Fowler, shot Jimmy Lee Jackson by mistake. He meant to shoot Jimmy Lee's grandfather, Cager Lee, who had been threatening another Officer outside of Mack's Cafe. Once inside, there was a scuffle and Fowler's gun was dropped on the floor. The gun went off and Jimmy Lee was killed instantly.

Jimmy Lee Jackson was actually a police informant who had tipped off the authorities about a riot that had been planned for the night of February 18, 1965 by the NAACP. Jimmy Lee was shot while he was helping to stop the huge crowd from looting the A&P Supermarket in downtown Selma, Alabama.

Jimmy Lee Jackson was a popular Pastor of the local African American First Baptist Church in Selma. After he died, the church started to lose members because the new pastor did not preach many good sermons.

Jimmie Lee Jackson appeared to be on the way to recovery. One of the doctors decided Jimmie needed to undergo further surgery. There was an problem during the operation and doctors panicked and made a mistake anesthesia and in minutes Jimmie Lee stopped breathing and died. People believe Jimmie Lee Jackson could have survived had this botched operation not happened.

Jimmie Lee Jackson was struggling after his first surgery. Doctors decided Jimmie needed to undergo emergency surgery. During the operation there was a problem. Another injured patient had arrived in the ER, a white person. The doctors all left to work on the white patient and forgot about Jimmie. By the time they returned to poor Jimmie, he had lost too much blood and he died.

Even though there was a hospital just a block away from the shooting, it was for white people only. The African American Hospital was 5 miles away. By the time the ambulance arrived at the African American Hospital, Jimmie had passed away.

Jimmie Lee Jackson appeared to be on the way to recovery. However, Jimmie's doctor was a young and inexperienced surgeon. During surgery, this doctor couldn't find the bullet that had lodged in Jimmie's leg. He cut Jimmie's femoral artery by mistake. Poor Jimmie bled out in a matter of minutes.

James Bonard Fowler, an Alabama State Trooper, pled guilty to second degree manslaughter in 2007.

William Dinkins was convicted of medical malpractice for operating on Jimmie while he was intoxicated. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

James Reeb lost his job in the Alabama State Police. He received a suspended sentence for the shooting and 12 years of probation.

Edmund Pettus was accused of the murder, but never convicted. Instead the KKK named a bridge in Selma Alabama after him.

Jimmy Lee had attended a meeting at the Zion United Methodist Church with Grandfather and his Mother. Alabama state troopers attacked the people as they left the meeting. Jackson, his grandfather, and his mother run into a nearby Café. Troopers followed them inside and pushed his mother to the floor. Jimmie Lee’s begged the troopers to leave her alone. While trying to help his mother, a trooper grabbed him, shoved him into a cigarette machine, and shot him twice in the stomach.

Jimmy Lee, his Grandfather and his Mother broke into a peaceful KKK meeting and threatened the Imperial Wizard. Alabama state troopers chased them into nearby Café. Jimmie Lee’s grandfather attacked the troopers with a knife. A trooper shot him twice in the stomach in self defense.

Jimmie Lee had been drinking in Mack's Cafe in Marion, Alabama. When a KKK representative asked him to leave the restaurant, he punched the man in the back of his head. Mack Bonner, the owner, called the Police and they had to shoot poor Jimmie to stop him from killing the KKK man's wife.

Jimmy Lee had attended a meeting at the Zion United Methodist Church with Grandfather and his Mother. Alabama state troopers attacked the people as they left the meeting. Jackson, his grandfather, and his mother run into a nearby Café. Troopers followed them inside and pushed his mother to the floor. Jimmie Lee put his hands in the air and said, "Don't Shoot, I'm unarmed." The Trooper shot him anyway.

... as an eager, young twenty-six year old from the Black Belt of Alabama. He tried to register to vote several times, and because of racial discrimination in the South, he was denied each time.

... as an intelligent young man who was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Selma, Alabama. He had dedicated his life to the Lord. He also ran a Homeless Shelter for people of all races.

... as a good kid, who just couldn't stay out of trouble with the law. He had been arrested for assaulting the mother of the local KKK leader. The Klan was always harassing him and trying to get him into trouble.

... as a young teacher at the local African American Middle School. He taught Social Studies to 7th and 8th Graders. He had dedicated his life to educating African American children.

He was shot by a Alabama State Trooper without cause and while recovering from the gunshot wound, he died in the hospital because one of his doctors gave him too much anesthesia.

He was severely beaten by a mob of intoxicated KKK terrorists out to kill the first African American they saw on February 18, 1965. After being left along side the road to die, an angry mob of protestors, pushed him into a nearby ditch that was flooded due to a recent thunder storm. Unconscious, he drowned in less than 6 inches of water.

While trying to break up a fight between his Grandfather and his mother, he was accidentally shot in the arm in the melee. He couldn't afford to go to the doctor and his arm became severely infected and he was rushed to the hospital. A racist doctor there amputated the wrong arm because Jimmy Lee wouldn't stop complaining that he wanted another doctor. The result was that he developed Sepsis and died on blood poisoning.

Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot twice in the melee in Mack's Cafe. He could have survived either one of the gunshots separately, but the combination of two gunshots caused him to lose too much blood and he passed away on the way to the hospital.
