Using a wheel and axle.
Aim: to build a simple machine consisting of a wheel and axle.
Materials:
- 250mL tin can
- 2 paper clips
- length of firm wire
- sticky tape
- 100g mass
- string
Method:
- Set up the equipment shown in Figure A. Tape the two paperclips to hold the wire axle in position.
- Try to lift the 100g mass by twisting the wire around using your thumb and index figure.
- Remove the paperclips and remove the wire. Bend the end without the masses to form a handle as shown in Figure B.
- Reassemble the equipment and try to lift the masses bu turning the handle.
Paperclips could slip, making the wire handle useless.
Method is unclear in areas, and needs to be more specific. This could result in scientists not constructing the wheel and axle accurately.
The 400g weight would be too heavy to work, as the axle wouldn't balance the weight.
The wire would not work within this experiment because the bending would be difficult.
