In Greece there lived a beautiful young girl whose name was Arachne. She was beautiful, had long golden hair. She was well known for being great at spinning. People from all around would go and watch her use her loom.

One day as she was bragging about her talent, someone overheard her and asked her if she had gotten help from the goddess Athena. Arachne made fun of the question, implying Athena could have never taught her, she could never be as good as her, and in fact she could teach Athena several things.

Then, a tall woman appeared in front of Arachne. It was Athena. Athena told her she had heard she had been boasting about her talent and questioned her if she still claimed she had not taught her anything about weaving and spinning. And Arachne denied that her or anyone had taught her.

Athena couldn't believe how arrogant Arachne was so she challenged her to a contest. They would ask the whole world to come see them weave and spin, including the great Zeus and he would be the judge. The deal was, whoever's work was the best then the other would never weave again.

Both started weaving and both made beautiful creations. First Arachne wove marvelous beauty and made everyone be in awe, including Zeus. Then Athena wove the most beautiful picture. Again everyone was in awe and people forgot the beautiful creation Arachne has made before.

Arachne saw what Athena had made and she felt afraid and embarrassed. She cried thinking how would she live without weaving again. Athen realized Arachne would never have joy in her life if she couldn't weave so she took pity. Arachne begged Athen, apologized and asked her to undo the agreement.

Athena took Pity and told her "Since you will never be happy unless you can spin and weave, I will give you a new form". Arachne was changed into a spider. Happily Arachne started spinning a beautiful web. Since that say, it is said that Arachne still is alive and weaves and spins happily.
