The Flatiron Building is one of the most famous historic landmarks in New York. The iconic twenty-one-story building, best known for its triangular shape, was one of the early spectacular high-rises that have come to define Manhattan.

The Flatiron Building was constructed between 1901 and 1903 at the intersection of Broadway and fifth Avenue, at the time one of the most prominent locations in New York City. It is situated near Madison Square at the end of the Ladies' Mile, one of Manhattan‟s most important shopping districts at the turn of the nineteenth century.

The Flatiron Building was designed by Chicago‟s Daniel Burnham as a steel-frame skyscraper clad in white terra-cotta. At 21 stories and 93 meters, it was one of the city‟s tallest buildings. Its singular shape and prominent location soon made it one of New York City's most famous landmarks.

The building probably featured on more postcards than any other buildings of its time. The whole area, the Flatiron district, was even named after the building. Originally the Flatiron Building featured an observation deck on the top floor, but taller buildings have taken over this function. It is still, however, a popular tourist attraction and one of the most photographed landmarks in New York.

Dear Rachel

You know, it got very cold here this past week, and it snowed! Not much snow for German standards, but

a lot nonetheless. I went for a walk across the field near my house today and into the forest. Forests in the

winter time are so beautiful; I am now realizing how fortunate I am to have been born here! I feel privileged to experience such wonderful seasons here. The seasons are very pronounced in Germany, more so than in the UK. Summer is hot and sunny, autumn is painted yellow and red, and winter is cold, sometimes very cold, with lots of snow. And spring is actually quite similar to spring in the UK. I'll try to get hold of a camera; unfortunately I haven't got one at the moment. I can then take some pictures of the forest for you to see. Have you ever seen trees whose long and thin twigs are completely encased in layers of ice?

Where the whole forest is filled with crackling noises when the wind blows through the canopies because

the ice around the twigs cracks slightly when they bend? And tall tree trunks, having lost all their leaves, stand firm – their highest branches move back and forth slowly, 30m above you when you throw your head back to take a glance at the sky. You see individual rays of sunlight, shining through the gaps between the trees. You also see very fine snowflakes, like dust of ice, slowly falling through the air. It is so beautiful that you wonder how people could forget how special this earth is and instead, turn to spending all their time sitting in an office, typing letters on a keyboard, not to earn a living, but to earn the admiration of others.

Write to me,

A robot is a machine. But it is not just any machine. It is a special kind of machine. It is a machine that moves. It follows instructions. The instructions come from a computer. Because it is a machine, it does not make mistakes. And it does not get tired. And it never complains. Unless you tell it to!

Robots are all around us. Some robots are used to make things. For example, robots can help make cars. Some robots are used to explore dangerous places. For example, robots can help explore volcanoes. Some robots are used to clean things. These robots can help vacuum your house. Some robots can even recognize words. They can be used to help answer telephone calls. Some robots look like humans. But most robots do not. Most robots just look like machines.

Long ago, people imagined robots. Over 2,000 years ago, a famous poet imagined robots. The poet’s name was Homer. His robots were made of gold. They cleaned things and they made things. But they were not real. They were imaginary. Nobody was able to make a real robot. The first real robot was made in 1961. It was called Unimate. It was used to help make cars. It looked like a giant arm.

In the future, we will have even more robots. They will do things that we can’t do. Or they will do things that we don’t want to do. Or they will do things that are too dangerous for us. Robots will help us fight fires. They will help us fight wars. They will help us fight sickness. They will help us discover things. They will help make life better.

As used in paragraph 1, we can understand that something special is NOT ....

a)

normal

b)

expensive

c)

perfect

d)

tired
