A man has to take a wolf, a goat, and some cabbage across a river. His rowboat has enough room for the man plus either the wolf or the goat or the cabbage. If he takes the cabbage with him, the wolf will eat the goat. If he takes the wolf, the goat will eat the cabbage. Only when the man is present are the goat and the cabbage safe from their enemies. All the same, the man carries wolf, goat, and cabbage across the river. How?

a)

A wolf does not eat cabbage, so the crossing can start with the goat. Man leaves the goat at the other side, returns, collects the cabbage. On the other side he leaves the cabbage and returns with the goat. He leaves the goat on the first bank and takes the wolf across. He leaves the cabbage with the wolf and rows back alone. He then brings the goat across.

b)

The wolf is the most dangerous animal so he should be taken across first. The man can then return for either the goat or the cabbage.

c)

The cabbage should be taken across first so it is not eaten by the goat. The man can then return for the goat before it is eaten by the wolf. Then finally he can return for the wolf and hope he does not get eaten by it.

a)

3 hours for each rung, so 9 hours for 3 rungs.

b)

A tide cannot be incoming for enough time so it will not reach as high as the third rung. It will take 6 hours to reach the second rung.

The ship does not have a hole in, so does not sink so the rope ladder will never be covered.
