We are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It is called

HeForShe. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to speak up, to be the “he” for “she”. And to ask

yourself if not me, who? If not now, when?

In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt I’ve told myself firmly—if not me, who,

if not now, when.

With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together.

This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.

Because the reality is that if we do nothing it will take 75 years, or for me to be nearly a hundred before

women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in

the next 16 years as children. And at current rates it won’t be until 2086 before all rural African girls will

be able to receive a secondary education.

You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl? And what is she doing up on stage at the UN. It’s a

good question and trust me, I have been asking myself the same thing. I don’t know if I am qualified to

be here. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to make it better.

If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone1, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.

I have borne thirteen children, and seen them most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman?

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:
