Butterflies have one of the most interesting life cycles of all insects. It begins when a butterfly attaches an egg to a leaf. When the egg hatches, a caterpillar emerges. Caterpillars feed and grow. As the caterpillar grows, it sheds its skin four or more times. The caterpillar eventually changes into a chrysalis, or pupa. In this transformation stage, the caterpillar tissues break down, and the adult insect’s structures are formed. Eventually, an adult butterfly emerges. The average life span of a butterfly is one month. The butterfly mates and lays eggs, and the life cycle starts again for a new butterfly.

Have you ever eaten a Jazz apple? They are medium-sized apples that are mainly red, but are broken up by areas of orange, yellow, and green. Jazz apples are considered quite flavorful, and they are usually one of the higher priced apples in a grocery store. These apples are very firm. In fact, it can be difficult to bite into a Jazz apple! Most people who take a bite, however, keep going back for more bites of this tasty, healthy treat!

Well, applesauce just may be the answer to your problem – especially if you are not able to go to the store right away. Applesauce can be used in place of butter and oil in baking recipes. The ratio of applesauce to butter is 1 to 1, meaning that if a recipe calls for 1/2 cup butter, you can use 1/2 cup applesauce instead. (Oil works the same way.) It can also be used as a substitute for an egg. For each large egg a recipe requires, use 1/4 cup applesauce in its place. Remember: the next time you are short on oil, butter, or eggs for baking, applesauce just may be the answer to your problem!

There are thousands of species of bacteria, and the human eye cannot see any of them without the help of a microscope. However, with the help of a microscope, scientists have discovered that all bacteria are basically one of three different shapes. One type is shaped like a rod, or a stick. These are called bacilli (buh-sill-eye). Another type is shaped like a little ball. These are called cocci (cox-eye). The third type is spiral-shaped. Bacteria consist of a single cell, and come in many shapes and colors

Dr. James Naismith is known as the inventor of basketball. He invented the game in 1891 for students at a school in Massachusetts. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. It gained popularity and was eventually being played at schools all over the United States. By 1893, just two years after the first game was played, basketball was gaining popularity in other countries! Basketball was introduced at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Today, basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports.

Basketball has changed a lot since its invention in 1891. For example, dribbling was not part of the original game. The “baskets” have changed, too. When basketball was invented, peach baskets were hung at each end of the court, and players tried to shoot the ball into the basket. Now, the “basket” consists of a hoop with an open-bottom hanging net. In 1891, three pointers did not exist. Today, three point lines are painted on nearly every basketball court. However, some features of basketball have remained the same over the years. Players are not allowed to run while holding the ball, and the ball must be passed with the hands. The goal has always been to get the ball into the basket. Certain basketball rules will never change.

Butterflies and moths are both flying insects. Both have wings and antennae. They have similar life cycles that include the egg and caterpillar stages. However, they are different in several ways. Butterflies are usually active during the day, while moths tend to be active at night. Butterflies have knobs at the end of their antennae, but moths do not. Butterflies hold their wings up when they land, whereas moths keep their wings flat when they land.

Building a Campfire

Sitting around a campfire is a classic summer camping tradition. Before you can tell scary stories, though, you will need to build your fire. Begin by gathering fire wood from around your camp. In addition to wood, you will need other tinder like pine needles, bark, or dead plants to help ignite the fire. Then, dig a small pit for your fire and build a ring of stone around it for maximum safety. Place your wood and tinder into the pit and start the fire using an ignition source such as a match. Once ignited, slightly blow on your flame to build heat. When you have a flame, use large pieces of firewood to build a teepee. Now sit back and relax in front of your roaring campfire!
